Telematics Update has published its Automotive HMI Report 2013, containing an analysis of all relevant human-machine interface (HMI) features by vehicle segment and an overview of “best in market” HMI designs, including those from automakers such as BMW, Audi, Ford, and General Motors.

Shipments to exceed 62 million by 2018 as feature set explodes
ABI Research predicts that shipments of connected automotive infotainment systems will grow from 9 million in 2013 to more than 62 million in 2018 with connected navigation, multimedia streaming, social media, and in-car Wi-Fi hotspots becoming key features.
Volvo Car Group is integrating the digital streaming music service Spotify into the vehicle dash through Volvo’s Sensus Connected Touch. The integration is both voice-activated and touch enabled. Drivers can stream music with a 3G/4G dongle or via the driver’s mobile phone connection through their dashboard.
“Our present systems for auto braking, lane keeping aid and adaptive cruise control could be described as the first steps towards autonomous driving,” says Marcus Rothoff, Volvo’s product attribute manager, driver assistance. “Now, we are moving towards technologies with a higher degree of autonomous driving in normal traffic situations.”
South American vehicle sales are forecast to reach 4.5 million units by 2014, with Brazil accounting for 60% of the total. According to ANFAVEA, Brazil’s National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, new car sales in Argentina and Colombia were up by 50% and 25% respectively over unit sales in 2006, and new car sales tripled in Peru from 2006 to 2010.
