Mentor Graphics Corporation has announced three new software products that together represent a significant expansion of the company’s Capital® product suite from electrical system and wire harness design flow to include configuration complexity, harness manufacturing, and vehicle documentation and maintenance.
With the addition of the three new products, Capital Level Manager, Capital ModularXC, and Capital Publisher, Mentor’s Capital suite now delivers coverage from product definition to maintenance service, “an extended define-design-build-service capability,” the firm said, adding that the new products provide value for platform OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), wire harness manufacturers, and service organizations.

Today’s automotive challenges are similar to those experienced in the telecommunications industry more than ten years ago. New technologies, such as hybrid-electric and fuel cell vehicles, are hotbeds of research and development activity comparable to what we saw during the evolution of cell phones into multimedia devices. In the same way that the telecomm industry faced power and chip size limitations, automotive designers are being stretched to include more and more technology into what used to be basically a mechanical device.
