The City of Oxnard, California has awarded Iteris, Inc. a $750,000 contract for the design phase of the Oxnard Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Master Plan project.

The planned improvements are in line with the city’s ITS Master Plan, which was completed by Iteris in 2008. The system should improve the flow of vehicles citywide, more finely calibrate traffic signals, and improve the city’s ability to respond to traffic snarls.

The project involves implementing an Ethernet-based communication system between nearly 200 signalized intersections and possibly incorporating signalized intersections from adjacent agencies like the city of Port Hueneme and the county of Ventura. The system will include a combination of new fiber optic cable and wireless technologies, and a new Traffic Management Center with video surveillance of traffic and the ability to inform drivers of detours and accidents in real time.
