At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month Alcatel-Lucent demonstrated a Ford Transit van equipped with broadband technologies and cloud-based applications connecting mobile workers.
The connected service vehicle was one of a dozen cloud-based service concepts created by the ng Connect Program, which was founded by Alcatel-Lucent. The ng Connect Program is a multi-industry ecosystem dedicated to creating next-generation user experience for connected consumers. More than 190 companies are members.
Trimble’s ThingMagic® Mercury6 (M6) RFID Reader was included the ng Connect Program’s Connected Service Vehicle, which showcased a suite of cloud-based services designed to deliver office productivity to vehicle-based workers. In the concept vehicle the ThingMagic reader supported work order-based inventory management and tool tracking applications to illustrate aspects of a typical service visit.
“Using the vehicle as the basic point of data capture can enhance productivity,” says Bernd Schoner, vice president of business development at Trimble’s ThingMagic Division (www.thingmagic.com). “Uploading asset information from the vehicle to a central data aggregation layer for anywhere, anytime consumption by a variety of applications is the future.”
Other service concepts developed by ng Connect member companies addressed requirements in health and wellness, energy management, education, public safety, and application development.
Alcatel-Lucent products featured in the demos include CloudBand™, Digital Media Store, Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON), IMS, 4G LTE, New Conversation APIs, and Velocix.
“The next generation ecosystem goes beyond traditional players. It also includes innovators in media, entertainment, consumer electronics and other sectors,” says Jason Collins, VP, Emerging Technology & Innovation for Alcatel-Lucent. “The ng Connect Program brings together all these kinds of companies to overcome the technical and business barriers preventing service providers from mass deployment of the services their customers want.”
